The Arboricultural Association (AA), the home of professional arboriculture, has reached over 3,000 members for the first time in its history after membership subscriptions grew by an incredible 20.3% in 2018.
As recently as 2016 the AA finished the year with 2340 members on board, last year’s final figure of 3,206 means membership has increased by 37% in 2 years.
Key statistics (v 2016 benchmark)
- Foundation grade (previously Ordinary grade) increased by 37%.
- Within the ‘Qualified’ grades; Technician memberships have grown by 18%, while we have seen 24% growth at Professional grades.
- A variety of organisations from Contractors to Local Authorities and Premier League football clubs contributed to an 18% rise in Corporate members.
- The most staggering success though was Student membership, with 348 joining in the calendar year. No doubt stimulated by the introduction of free student membership and greater student engagement such as the launch of the Student Conference.
Excluding the free Student Membership figures the increase in paying members, 2017 to 2018, was an extremely positive 8% this builds solidly on the previous year’s growth of 8%.
This growth trend really does buck the trend of many other membership organisations, who are suffering membership decline, we are making steady progress. We cannot be complacent though and will continue to promote membership even further in a growing industry we can do much more to drive up standards and increase overall industry professionalism. Public knowledge and engagement will be a key, you can all play a part in promoting our industry and the association.
Thank you to every member, long-standing and new who have spread the word and supported the Association’s efforts to advance the industry and raise its profile. We’re thrilled you’ve joined us on this journey as we look to carry on growing arboriculture and improving the services we offer to you.
