ARB Show at APF 2022
For the first time ever, the ARB Show joined forces with APF to welcome over 20,000 visitors. The show generated hugely positive feedback from visitors, with ARB Show activities bringing an expanded focus on arboriculture to the event. Thank you to everyone who visited the ARB Show area.
The ARB Show will return to Westonbirt, The National Arboretum
12th-13th May 2023
Knot Tying Competition
Matt Graham once again claimed the Arboricultural Association Knot Tying Competition record at the show, completing the 5 knots – bowline, Prusik, alpine butterfly, Blake’s hitch, figure of 8 – in 15.69 seconds. Second place went to Patrick Hayes with a time of 17.87 seconds. Thanks to Marlow Ropes, Treekit and Outwear Ltd for their support and providing some great prizes.
Throwline competition
The throwline competition was a big draw throughout the event, with the new targets proving tough for most competitors but not for top scorer Sam Jackson, who managed to score 150 points with his first two attempts. Ross Neville and Luke Goliah finished in a tie for 2nd with 125 points each.
Arborists’ Workshop sponsored by Hi-Line
For those looking for some in-depth sessions, the workshop held a specially curated timetable of industry experts sharing knowledge on a range of subjects throughout each day, covering pests and diseases, current standards for tree work, training in crane work, the Approved Contractor scheme, use of two ropes, veteran tree management, new trainer recruitment and many other topics.
Talks were recorded and will be made available for free on the Association’s YouTube channel in the coming weeks.

Arb Worker Zone
One obstacle we encountered in organising the show was the distinct lack of trees on site but a specially constructed climbing frame allowed our experts Alex Laver, Ben Rose, Chris Cooper-Abbs and Matt Brooker to give regular demonstrations and climber workshops throughout each day, with impartial advice about climbing kit, current standards and tips for effective and safe working.
Finally, we’d like to say a big thank you to all the members who kindly volunteered their time to help make the event a success; we couldn’t have done it without your support.
UK Open sponsored by Harkie
Over at the APF demo circuit, climbers of all levels competed in what was the first ever tree climbing competition to take place at an APF Show. Thank you to all the climbers who took part in what was a fantastic spectacle, made possible by sponsors Harkie, who donated fantastic prizes.
The competition wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for all the amazing volunteers, pictured opposite, so thanks again to you all.
