Method Statements for Commercial Arboriculture

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain why method statements are required and how they can be useful to a contracting business.
  • Identify industry guidance that can guide the process of developing method statements (including industry code of practice for arboriculture – Tree work at height (ICOP)).
  • Highlight what a method statement can contain and which sections require more detail.
  • Identify steps to take to reduce the likelihood of a method statement being rejected.
  • Use a proforma method statement.
  • Demonstrate how to communicate a method statement to the workforce.

Course Content:

  • Course Introduction
  • Why method statements? Legal requirements and likely scenarios.
  • Which parties are responsible for what? Principle contactors, employers, contactors, sub-contractor, staff, other contractors.
  • Overview of the principles & guidance stated in the industry code of practice for arboriculture – Tree work at height (ICOP)
  • A reminder about building safe systems of work and what the industry already has at its disposal
  • Expectations of your client – What do they require and why. Comparison with what your team actually does.
  • Method statements - The long version. Overview explanation of template document.
  • How to record actual detail with examples for a range of tree work scenarios and what to collect at the quoting stage (Indoor and outdoor session with team exercise).
  • Method statements - The short version. Overview and explanation of template document and how to refine and tailor the template documents.
  • How to use method statements to best effect within a business and communicating them to the work force (this includes a team briefing exercise from the instructor).
  • Pre-empting questions – What to reasonably expect back from your client and extra documents to send.
  • Summing up and final questions.

Module Pre-requisites:

None. Ideally delegates will have an understand of risk assessment such as attendance on the AA risk assessment for commercial arboriculture course.
