Safety & Health Awareness Day for Arboricultural Operations

Course Objectives:

  • To increase the competence, knowledge and understanding of those contractors attending the SHAD, in particular with regard to complying with current legislative requirements, awareness of significant health and safety issues and where to find practical advice on how to implement safe working practices;
  • To support a reduction in the number of fatal and major injuries in arboriculture by disseminating industry good practice and making those who work in the industry more aware of the benefits of working safely

Non-members who join the Association at Associate level or above, and pays for an annual membership in full, will receive a free admission to this event. Existing members that recommend a friend or colleague, who joins at Associate level or above, will receive a free admission to this event also.

Course Content:

The objectives will be achieved by the delivery of a mixture of indoor presentations and outdoor exercises on:

Pre work assessment:

  • Outside exercise to plan work methods, initial risk assessment and resource management

Training and certification available to arborists- LANTRA Awards, NPTC City and Guilds etc:  

  • Current training and certification systems available in the UK.
    Industry Safety Guides and Codes of Practice relevant to practical arboriculture
  • Current HSE/industry guidance available

PPE available to arborists:

  • PPE required for chainsaw use, both on and off the ground

Risk Assessment for Commercial Arboriculture:

  • Understanding both generic and site specific risk assessments

Application of LOLER to Arboriculture

  • What arboricultural equipment is subject to LOLER and the inspection regimes that are required

Work at Height - outside demonstrations and exercise: 

  • Demonstration of safe techniques for gaining access into, moving around in and descending from trees
  • Demonstration of the safe use of top-handled chainsaws
  • Demonstration of aerial rescue
  • Work at height safety audit
  • Delegates to carry out safety audit.

Module Pre-requisites:

Who is the course aimed at? The course is aimed at any arboricultural contractors and clients procuring arboricultural services. Pre-requisites: None, although delegates should be working in arboricultural contracting or procuring arboricultrual services.

Terms of Cancellation or Amendments to details

  • We reserve the right to cancel courses and refund applicants if there is insufficient demand.
  • A FULL charge will be applied to any booking cancelled less than 10 working days before the event.
  • A £30 administration charge may be applied to changes made to bookings that have been received and acknowledged.
