Course Objectives

  • Identify policy justifications for decision-making
  • Clarify the role of arborists in the wider planning framework
  • Demonstrate how to effectively communicate
  • Show the importance of drawings and plans, and concise and clear documents
  • Explain that planning is a negotiation, not a fight
  • Understand how to work as part of a team
  • Explain that arborists are a small part of the process and clarify arborist role – to assist decision-makers
  • Learn how to use highway objectives to work for trees
  • Demonstrate co-operation is better than being adversarial
  • See what can be achieved (with case studies) and raise awareness of potential problems
  • Show how to bridge the gap between planning and implementation

  • The reference framework for managing urban trees (Town & Country Planning Act, BS5837, BS8545, TDAG publications)
  • The emerging focus on tree benefits and the potential to use i-Tree within the planning system
  • Local plans and tree strategies
  • Importance of plans - strategies for dealing with the complexity of CAD
  • Written documentation – purpose of reports (enforcement & communication), focused writing, organisation
  • Constraints – RPAs and future growth
  • Arboricultural appraisal reports – purpose and content
  • Arboricultural method statements – purpose and content
  • Structural tree planting strategies – proving enhancement
  • Importance of collaboration – a new model for team working between the public and private sectors
  • Doing more for less - smart working within the planning framework
  • Highways and adoption issues
  • Planning submission & processing – efficiency do’s and don’ts
  • Post-planning consent management – pre-commencement meetings, supervision and discharging conditions
  • Redefining the management of trees within the planning process
  • Putting it all into practice – case studies including (Bomber Command Memorial, the Leicester Square refurbishment and the Connaught artwork installation):

Module Pre-requisites:

It is expected that delegates will have experience of trees within the planning process.
