– A chance to tour the Westonbirt collection and learn more about trees and their management at the arboretum.

Heritage Tree Walk

– Westonbirt is a renowned arboretum that is home to 2,500 different species of tree and shrub from the far corners of the globe and 5 national tree collections. On this short walk we will look at three aspects of heritage: global extinction, champions by size and biodiversity.

Globally, one in three tree species are threatened with extinction in the wild. At Westonbirt there are more than 100 species that are assessed as threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Lets see if we can find one.

As a Trustee of the Tree Register of the British Isles, I would like the group to see at least one champion tree by girth and one by height, but don’t be surprised if these are relatively small trees because they have only recently been introduced to the UK.

Dotted across and around the exhibition site are some very nice veteran oaks which we can survey to see what qualifies them for this classification. If you have time, outside the guided walk, do try to visit the internationally important, ancient, Three Parish Oak at ST8440290152 ///scrapping.grills.exam which has a girth of 6.42m

Join an entomologist and a pathologist

– from Forest Research to walk around the arboretum and discuss tree pests and diseases.

We will look for examples of ill health and explain the signs to check for, as well as how to report cases to the Tree Health team. The walk is usually about an hour and a half in length and will give a chance to discover much more about the beautiful trees and the organisms that can cause them problems.

We will be on our stand throughout the show and are keen to talk about the threats that are on the horizon for Britain’s trees, with a focus on Canker Stain of Plane this year.
