This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced arborist to join Basingstoke and Deane Borough Counci.

Trees and woodlands are a key feature of the borough, with an evolving urban forest, surrounded by beautiful Hampshire villages and the North Wessex Downs Area National Landscape. We place great value on our large, diverse, and interesting tree resource on both public and private land, which makes our borough a great place to live and work.

The sound management of the borough’s trees is a priority for the council, due to the benefits they provide for people and wildlife and also the contribution they make to our key priorities, such as the Climate Change Strategy.

We are looking for someone that is enthusiastic and self-motivated to join the Natural Environment Team which includes trees & woodlands, ecology and biodiversity, landscape architecture and open space. As a member of the Tree Team, you will be involved in the management of trees and woodlands, delivering the emerging tree strategy for the benefit of citizens, residents, business, and nature, as well as providing a consultative service to the Planning Authority in respect of tree-related matters within the Town & Country Planning Act. Although candidates may not have both tree management and planning experience, training may be considered for the right candidate.

You will have a proven track record of working in a similar environment, a thorough knowledge and detailed understanding of current issues and professional practices is essential, combined with excellent communication and team working skills.

This position would best suit someone who wants to use their knowledge and skills to deliver a wide range of arboricultural work, to make a difference and be part of a motivated and professional natural environment team. You will be able to work independently as well as working in a team environment, be that in the office or working from home. The role will involve working with colleagues, councillors, residents and external bodies and partners.

For an informal discussion about the post, please contact Jan Polnik, Principal Tree Officer, on 01256 845174 or by email at jan.polnik@basingstoke.gov.uk.
