Course Objectives:

2022 is Scotland’s Year of Stories; the heritage trees and treescapes of Scotland bear witness to the nation’s history and culture, support its ecology and are part of a world class landscape.

This one day event offers a chance to hear about some of Scotland’s most valued heritage trees. Management approaches, historic background, environmental relevance, protections, etc., will be discussed before a guided tour of Dunkeld’s world famous heritage trees.

The day comprises: A morning of presentations with coffee break and an afternoon heritage tree walk/field trip

Tea and coffee will be provided. Please bring your own packed lunch or you can purchase lunch at the venue's cafe as well as at various options within the local area.

Course Content:

9.00am - Arrival – tea & coffee

9.30am - Introduction & Welcome – Chris Simpson

9.40am -  Chris Knapman: ‘Scotland’s Arboreal Heritage Part 1 Treescapes’

10.20am - Christopher Dingwall: The Origin of the National Tree Collections of Scotland

11.00am - Coffee Break

11.30am - Paul Hanson: ‘Tinkering with Veteran Trees!’

12.00pm - Chris Knapman: ‘Scotland’s Arboreal Heritage Part 2 Cultural and

                  Ecological Connections’

12.40pm - Discussion/Questions, Summary, Afternoon arrangements

1pm -         Lunch

1.45pm - Tree Walk: Birnam Oak/Sycamore along Tay to Neil Gow’s Oak

               Possibly Dunkeld Cathedral if time allows

4.30pm – Return & Close
