Utility arboriculture represents an estimated £150 million of arboricultural work in the UK each year adjacent to electricity supplies, plus work adjacent to rail and telecommunications networks. It is important that the standards of both tree work and safety within the industry are consistent nationwide and this is the principal objective of the AA Utility Arboriculture Group. The AA UAG operates under the AA’s Professional Committee and is comprised mainly of utility arboriculture contractors who recognise the importance of working together to bring about positive change in the industry. The Group’s Terms of Reference focus on the unification of standards and recognise that this will only be achieved and maintained by fostering appropriate links with clients particularly the electricity suppliers (Distribution Network Operators), the Department of Trade and Industry as regulator, the Health and Safety Executive, training organisations (especially Lantra Awards), awarding bodies (especially NPTC) and so on. If you’ve got this far down our page, I must assume you are interested in Utility Arboriculture in some manner or form. On this page(s) you will find the link to the minutes of the last UAG Core Group meeting. You can receive these automatically by becoming a virtual member of the UAG – a no cost option – just send a short email to mel@trees.org.uk and you are on the list. The UAG seeks to serve the industry and is steered by its members as represented on the Core Group. You can have a voice and a vote on proceedings by becoming a full member of the UAG by opting to pay an additional £9.00 per annum over and above the yearly AA membership fee – see membership pages. Over the last 12 months the UAG has played a part on the consultative process leading up to the publication of G55/2, the formulation and drafting of the revised NPTC UA units as well as seeking a mandate to take forward the industries requirement for the integration of qualifications and authorisations. This resulted in a stakeholders meeting in November where a clear and ambitious proposal was agreed: The Utility Arboriculture Industry seeks to commission an awarding body to deliver vocational qualifications, which in addition to meeting the requirements of proving competence, establish a safer, career based medium through which Employer & Employee are able to develop and manage their work activities. The industry needs you to get involved in things like this after all it is all our futures, so get a voice, get involved.
