Tree associated fungi & veteran tree management: New insights into fungal strategy & the management

Dr Helen Read will cover topics including:

 

 

• The problems of managing a population of ancient beech and oak trees – the ageing process, pollards, decay processes, the value of the trees in terms of biodiversity, growth types and the consequences of growth and decay for management • the situation at Burnham Beeches

 

• Population structure and looking to the future with young pollards, grazing and a long-term vision

 

Professor Lynne Boddy will cover topics including:

 

• An introduction to the range of symbionts

 

• Understanding the relative life-cycles, roles and functions of mycorrhizae, endophytes and pathogens

 

• The variety of fungal communities found in trees and their interaction

 

• A range of other organisms found in wood – vertebrates, invertebrates and 'red listed' fungi the role of bacteria in wood decay ecology
